CROWNS, ONLAYS AND BRIDGES:

Crowns (caps) and Onlays (partial crowns) are dental restorations that are placed over teeth when conservative fillings are not sufficient to restore form and function.

Bridges replace missing teeth. The most common type of bridge consists of crowns placed on either side of a missing tooth with a replacement tooth attached to both crowns. Another type of bridge consists of the replacement tooth connected to the adjacent teeth by wing-like appendages. Bridges can also be supported by dental implants.

Crowns, Onlays and Bridges can be made entirely of

tooth-colored material, metal or a combination of the two.

Crowns and Onlays:

Crowns and Onlays restore tooth function and improve esthetics. In most cases they are used to protect and preserve the remaining tooth structure in teeth with large and broken down fillings. A metal-free crown can be made to replace an older metal/porcelain crown to enhance your smile.

Also, following root canal therapy, a crown is typically placed over the remaining tooth structure to preserve tooth function and esthetics.

Bridges:

In cases where teeth are missing, bridges improve esthetics by filling the spaces and provide stability by preventing the surrounding teeth from drifting.

Bridges also provide a permanent, fixed alternative to removable partial or full dentures.

Supported by natural teeth or implants, bridges provide natural esthetics and stable biting surfaces.

They can easily be maintained by brushing and modified flossing.

Appointments:

At the first appointment the dentist shapes the teeth, takes an impression and provides a temporary cover for the prepared teeth. A lab will then make the crown, onlay or bridge to the exact specifications requested.

At the second appointment, the dentist removes the temporary cover and cements or bonds on the permanent restoration.
