IMPLANTS:

Implants are an alternative to conventional bridges and dentures to replace one or more missing teeth.

They are more like natural teeth because they stand alone and do not require preparing or attaching to the adjacent teeth for support.

In addition they help maintain the bone mass that usually shrinks after teeth are removed. Implants can therefore provide strength for adjacent teeth as well as preventing a sunken in facial appearance.

An implant consists of a biocompatible titanium screw and a crown, bridge or denture on top.

Appointments:

First, a consultation with a Periodontist (gum specialist) is arranged to ensure an implant is an appropriate choice to fill a space. Typically they will study the soft tissue, supporting bone and surrounding teeth in the area.

X-rays and a 3-D scan are necessary to make a thorough assessment.

Once the area is deemed appropriate,  the periodontist will reappoint to surgically place one or more implants in the jawbone.

The gum tissue is then sutured back over the site. Healing takes place over 4-6 months and the patient may choose to wear a temporary prosthesis to fill the space.

Once the implant has completely integrated with bone it is uncovered by the periodontist.

Then you return to your dentist where impressions will be taken to fabricate the crown, bridge or denture to cover the implant.
